Grand Slam Round Robin
Eight mixed doubles teams competed in this annual Round Robin event with each court representing a different grand slam tournament. Court 1 was the Australian Open where each team started the point off in the Australian position. Court 2 represented the French Open where all points are required to be played two back on the baseline. Wimbledon was on Court 3 where serve & volley and chip & charge were the order of the day. The U.S. Open was represented on Court 4 where one player up and one back was required. There were burgers and hotdogs, chicken salad, potato salad and fruit salad being served court side to be topped off with pies and cheesecake for desert. But, we understand that the epicurean hit was the steak tips cooked to perfect by our own grill master, Kyp Cooperrider. The finals came down to Lili Cooperrider and Eric Gong vs. Kendra & Todd Merolla with the Cooperrider/Gong team coming out on top.
Martha's Vineyard Open Tournament
July 28th - 30th
to benefit MV Cancer Support Group
The second in our series of charity tennis tournaments took place over this past weekend. Concerned about the possibility of a rain out on Saturday, tournament organizers scheduled as many matches as possible on Friday. As it turned out, it was a wise move. Rain Saturday morning delayed matches for several hours but all scheduled matches were completed. Sunday turned out to be a perfect day for tennis with many closely contested final matches played. Thanks to the combined efforts of players, supporters, sponsors and volunteers, many dollars were raised in support of the Martha's Vineyard Cancer Support Group. Final results can be found HERE.
Breakfast at Wimbledon
Although the play was uninspiring, due in large part to Marin Cilic's injured left foot, for the Roger Federer fans (and there were many!), it was the making of tennis history by winning an 8th Wimbledon Championship title. At The Neck, the champagne flowed, the strawberries and cream eaten with the accompaniment of coffee, croissants, honey buns and assorted pastries. There was plenty of tennis as players engaged in a fun, quick and exciting Round Robin Mixer called Fast & Furious. A fun time was had by 40 or so attendees and we were happy to have the opportunity to show our appreciation to all those that make playing at The Neck part of their tennis schedule.
Early Bird Doubles Tournament
June 23rd - 25th
to benefit Hospice of Martha's Vineyard
It was a great start on Friday as players came to Farm Neck to play their first round matches in the Compass Draw. The play continued early Saturday morning but was interrupted by fairly heavy rain for several hours. A few hours delay and we were back on the courts, thanks to the speedy and excellent work of the pros getting the courts ready. Also, a big thank you to all the players who were great getting their times and showing up promptly for their rescheduled matches. Final results are HERE.
