We made it to London … attended the pre-Wimbledon IC Ball at the Dorchester Hotel (a very posh, black tie affair) last Saturday night, took our picture with the Davis Cup Trophy, which was on display at the ball and met up with many friends that we haven’t seen in several years. After much eating, drinking and dancing, we rolled home at about 1am. On Sunday, we attended the Garden Party at the Hurlingham Club, which is an annual pre-Wimbledon event. There we watched a doubles exhibition with Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares (the #3 seeds at
Wimbledon) playing against Horia Tecau and Jean-Julian Rojer (the #4 seeds at Wimbledon). It was a very entertaining match with Tecau and Rojer pulling out a win in two very tight sets. Of course, Sue (being a Brit and all) had to have Afternoon Tea after which we had a nice walk around the grounds watching people play tennis on the numerous grass courts, play croquet and try their hand at electronic skeet shooting. The rain held off just long enough for us to enjoy the day before heading back to our friends, Kit & Lesley, who were at home in Basingstoke about 1 1/2 hours outside London.
We had arranged this past week to visit friends and family so on Monday we drove to Whitstable in Kent, a seaside resort town known for their oysters and seafood. Sue’s cousin, a musician, lives there. We rented a beautiful flat on AirBnB which was very convenient to everything and despite the rain we had a good time with him and his girlfriend. The only downside to all of this is that it has rained on and off every day since we’ve arrived in England! We are hoping that the sun will come out soon so we can enjoy our week at the Wimbledon Championships.
Mas Kimball has been a pro at Farm Neck since 2006. He & his wife, Sue, have traveled throughout the United States and internationally ... mostly to play tennis.
